Fitness is commonly defined as the total health of a person physically, mentally and socially. Yes, at some level it is about being able to complete a marathon or lifting heavy weights, but it is also about having the strength and energy to do the things that you need and/or want to do each day of your life.

There are five components of fitness:

Cardiorespiratory endurance: This is the capability of your heart, lungs and blood to meet your muscles oxygen needs for body activities.

Muscular strength: This is the total level of force that any muscle can generate.

Muscular endurance: This is the capacity of such a muscle to contract over some time.

Flexibility: This is the degree of motions that your joints permit you to enjoy Most joints are bony, which should inform this point.

Body composition: This is the relation of metabolically active mass to fat mass.

The Benefits of Fitness

Improved physical health: Physical exercise is effective in weight loss, muscle gain, chronic disease risk reduction including heart diseases, stroke, type 2 diabetes, and certain forms of cancer.

Improved mental health: These include: Since exercise can help to improve the moods, reduce stress levels and thus help improve on self confidence. 

Increased energy levels: Daily physical exercise will assist you in feeling more energetic during the day.

Better sleep: Physical activity also has positive effects on ability to sleep and quality of the sleep.

Improved cognitive function: It will help you in your memory, ability to concentrate and make correct decisions.

How to Get Fit

Fitness can be achieved in many different forms. The most important question though is what activities you are passionate about and can sustain until you achieve your goal.

Here are some tips for getting started:
