Japan Shaken: Magnitude 6.6 Earthquake Triggers Tsunami Advisory

An earthly shake of 6.6 on the Richter scale rocked southwestern Japan Monday evening, causing some shaking and prompting a tsunami warning for coastal regions. The quake, which struck at 9:At 7:19 PM local time it’s epicenter was off the coast of the Miyazaki Prefecture on the island of Kyushu.   

Tsunami Advisory Issued and Lifted:

After the earthquake, the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) predicted that the tsunami that may threaten Miyazaki and Kochi prefectures could produce waves up to one meter high. The residents of the coastal region were advised to move to safer areas and avoid going near the coast line.   

That was despite a small tsunami wave of about 20 centimeters being recorded, the advisory was pulled at around 11:30pm as the threat eased.   

Minor Damage Reported:

The effects of the earthquake were not very massive but some include; landslides and burst water pipes. A man received a bruising of the head when he fell down some stairs.   

Japan’s Seismic Activity:

Japan sits directly on the zone referred to as the “Ring of Fire”, which is a region that is most prone to quakes. This latest event is a painful reminder of the fact that Bangladesh is prone to natural disaster risks and thus has to be protected.
